During lockdown, just before the end of the summer term, pupils from Years 4, 7, 8 and 9 took part in a national competition run by Big Ideas, a company that supports projects bringing communities and countries together.
The Great Exhibition of 1851 showcased great inventions of the time and the Great Exhibition at Home competition was designed to get pupils thinking about what they would invent to benefit the world while they were stuck at home. Pupils had to submit a two minute video showcasing their idea. There were some amazing ideas from all of the pupils that entered and 19 pupils across the year groups received certificates of commendation for their work, however Thomas Pugh in Year 10 caught the attention of the judges with his fantastic GymGenerator idea and was awarded a Special Commendation prize as his entry was one of the top entries across the whole of the country. This was an amazing achievement and we are extremely proud of him and his idea which can be watched on the video link below. He received an individual prize for his excellent work.
As a result of our super talented pupils’ big ideas and the work that we do to support STEM challenges Oakhill was also awarded a Champion School prize of STEM materials from the RAF Youth to support our STEM learning in school. We are looking forward to using them in class and outside of the classroom in extra curricular activities.
Well done to all of the pupils who got involved showing that even in such unusual circumstances great things can be created.
